Blog Site Reviews: More That Obama Did Right

The Chapeau Blog Awards is proud to present “Blog Site Reviews”!  It’s here that our dedicated team of blog site reviewers will put your blog to the test and share with the world either what you already know (ie your blog is the best in its class!) or what you really need to hear (i.e. fellow blogger – your blog needs some work).

For our inaugural review, we are proud to review the blog of former Illinois State Senator Barack Obama.  Obama made headlines with seemingly every step throughout his monumentous presidential campaign.  Many of these headlines were made solely by the Obama campaign itself as, instead of relying solely on traditional media, reached out an embraced new and social media, particularly through his hope filled ObamaBlog.

Through each step of his carefully executed campaign, many said Obama made few, if any missteps.  Did his blog match this pattern?  Find out in the video below as ObamaBlog is reviewed by Susan Misukanis, and guest reviewer Mike Yanke.

It’s hard to mistake a truly great blog!

Obama’s Blog truly offers readers political and personal insight into Obama.

I'm bummed though, because I can't find the basketball shots of Obama going for 3 points as easily as I could before.

Perhaps a search function should replace the on line store :-)

Enjoyed your review. We all know that the Obama blog was never intended to be "from" the man himself but written by his staff. However, as in so many blogs that use this genre even the author/s of the posts never join in on the conversation. In this case it is simply a blog platform that is being used to "push" out, as you indicated, well crafted messaging but not to establish relationships or even "talk to the people."

Since you discuss "best practices" I'd be interested in your opinion about using the same format for an enterprise blog: a blog written by a staff or paid blog copy writer where there is conversation only among the community and not the people who are authoring the posts.

By the way, a link to the blog would be a nice touch to your post.

There are more countries in the world than the USA…

    Hey Toby,
There are many apples that suit many varying tastes – right?

The same holds true for the many types of audiences online today. Yes, I'm sure it's a shock to some, but most likely Obama does not author his own blog. Yet his audience certainly likes the flavor of http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hqblog/!

That said, the model of a staff of writers posting to enterprise blogs certainly does exist. Just search for “Blog Writers”. http://www.BloggersforHire.com, among many other blog staffing resources has been successful for some time now.

I also think it is perfectly fine for a blog to host a community conversation without stringent guidance by the blog owner.

Check out http://www.Sermo.com. This site hosts conversations among Physicians only. I'd tell you more, but my degree goes only as far as the undergraduate level – and they won't let me in.

Best blog practices should be less about a formula of who should write what and when. Best practices should be more about best communications practices. Because that is what a blog is, a communications channel regardless of the level of push or pull.

Does the blog stay on message enough to attract a consistent audience? To me, that is question #1. If the answer is yes, then fantastic, an audience may be well served.

If the answer is no, then the question is "why should I come back".

Speaking of coming back (for seconds that is), Have a Happy Turkey Day all.

    And enjoy the apple pie!
